Brooklyn`s Diverse Population is United in its Outstanding Schools We have to thank the Dutch people for putting Brooklyn on the map when they created the small settlement of Breuckelen on the East River shore in 1646. Only 18 years later the English conquered the New Netherlands and with it Brooklyn. The town formed, together with five other Dutch settlements, the new Kings County. This six-block long, flagstone-covered walkway along faces lower Manhattan and has been the setting for dozens of movies and television shows. Education in Brooklyn is provided by a vast number of public and private institutions. Brooklyn Tech located across Fort Green Park is the largest specialized high school for science, mathematics, and technology in the United States. The high school is noted for its famous alumni, including two Nobel Laureates, and the large number of graduates attending prestigious universities. Brooklyn College was the first public coeducational liberal arts college in New York City and is ranked in the top 10 nationally in Princeton Review’s 2006 guidebook. SUNY Downstate Medical Center is the oldest hospital-based medical school in the United States. The Medical Center comprises the College of Medicine, College of Nursing, School of Public Health, among others. The Nobel Prize winner Robert F. Furchgott is a member of its faculty.
